Documentary

Hundreds of thousands of documentaries are made a year. Many of them are unseen. Fortunately, Netflix has been bolstering its documentary efforts recently. Netflix has over 1,000 documentaries, and is starting to make an impact. Netflix has been huge in big and small films. They have added a huge amount to the marketplace, which is now being a huge resource to filmmakers.

Personally, I can count with my fingers the amount of documentaries I have seen. I usually do not have the time to sit down for two hours for a documentary. During my free time, I am either at the gym, catching up on sleep, or catching up with some of my favorite television shows. Even though I have not seen a lot of documentaries, the ones that I have seen were spectacular and have brought awareness to an issue or just how life is for certain individuals.

I believe documentaries are similar to Slactivism. Both bring light to an issue and will have people want to draw attention to the issue. But the question is if people will truly go forth with making a change, or just watch the film or "like" the post. In my own opinion, if you "like" the post or if you go across the world to help, both are helping. Both are bringing forth new information and knowledge to others. And that is what we need to make change.

  1. I completely agree! I was thinking the same thing while watching my documentary! Slacktivism is definitely connected to documentaries. I'm learning about important issues while sitting on my couch and eating popcorn, but then it leads me to look more into the addressed issue. Documentaries are more informative on certain issues than, let's say, a news program because they take a deeper look into the subject and it's sole purpose is to inform us, whereas, the media will give us a brief description and move onto the next story.
    Good post!

  2. I liked how you compared documentaries to slacktivism, I totally see the connection there! People will watch the film and think they've done their part by just knowing that the issue is there, and maybe if they're feeling daring they'll like the documentary Facebook page.

While I personally love documentaries I also agree that it's hard to set aside 2 hours to watch them, especially with our busy college student lives. Maybe it would be better to set aside 2 hours for a documentary in a day, instead of 2 hours of various other activities, but that's extremely debatable!

  3. I agree with what you said about liking a post helps. When we like or share something, Facebook has this concept of letting others know about it. If I see a friend liked a post, there is a higher chance I will open the link to see what it is about. It might contain a very important message about what is going on in the other side of the planet, and I might not travel there to help, but maybe we will let someone know about it who can help.

  4. The documentaries on netflix are great and they are really bringing attention to real life and current world issues. There is a great call for new and updated documentaries to be put on netflix because people want these stories to get out into the world and get people behind the problems. I personally love sports documentaries because they shine light onto these important events in the history of the world. Documentaries need to be shown in our world today because they show the light on these topics in our world today.
